I start the final image by laying the black and white sketch on a 'soft-light' layer and building color under that(not 'Multiply' or 'Overlay).
I have all the source files at work still. I'll see if I can put something together that will make a little more sense.
You've hit the nail on the head...getting rid of the black(K-tone) is very important... otherwise you end up with mud.
